3 ways to pay your HVUT: Mail in your check

We've talked about two ways to pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax that you owe to the IRS - setting up a direct bank account draft on 2290.us, and paying through eftps.gov, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. The benefits of paying online include a quicker withdraw from your account, and no worries about your check being lost or damaged in the mail.

If you're a bit more old fashioned, though, no worries. You don't have to pay your HVUT online, you can still pay by check. You'll work your way through the 2290.us eFiling process. We guide you through, step-by-step, to your Schedule 1. When you reach the submission and payment page, you'll see your three payment options. If you'd like to mail in your check, select that option.

We'll provide you information on mailing your 2290 check to the IRS, so that you're ready to mail it off right after submitting your form. When writing your check, make it payable to the United States Treasury. You may not send cash in payment of your HVUT. Send only a check.

On the back of the check, you'll need to write your Employee Identification Number (EIN), your daytime phone number, the words, "Form 2290," and the tax period that you are paying for. You'll print and include a copy of the payment voucher that we'll make available after you submit your form. This payment voucher is called a 2290-V. You should attach the check to your 2290-V, and mail it to the IRS address we'll give you.

You should also know that you'll need to accept responsibility for paying the HVUT by check, under penalties of perjury. Once you submit your IRS Form 2290 through 2290.us, you'll need to follow your submission by sending in your check. Don't forget to mail the IRS your check. They will receive your form, and will be waiting for the matching payment.

You'll still receive your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 in minutes - but you'll need to complete the mailing from your end before you're all set. Ready to file? Visit 2290.us to kick off your eFiling today!

3 ways to pay your HVUT: Electronic Payment through EFTPS.gov

So, you've taken a look at ACH - Direct Bank Account Drafting. You've considered entering your bank routing number and your bank account number, and having us take care of submitting your payment information to the IRS. What are you other payment options?

Well, you can make your payment directly to the IRS on their eftps.gov website. This option takes 2290.us out of the equation of IRS payment. We'll file your 2290 form for you, and you'll submit your payment online. No hard feelings, if that's the direction you want to go. We want you to make the best choice for you. A couple things you should know about paying your 2290 heavy vehicle use tax through the IRS' electronic payment system, though:

In order to send a payment through the EFTPS, you'll need to set up an account. If you indicated that you were likely to owe taxes when you applied for your EIN, then you may be pre-enrolled for this system. You should have received a letter with your PIN and EFTPS information, if this is the case.

If you didn't indicate that you'd owe taxes, then setting up your EFTPS account isn't nearly as easy as setting up a 2290.us account. The signup for eftps.gov is more of an enrollment process than a one-and-done. You'll enter your information on their site, then you'll wait.

You'll wait for five to seven business days to receive your PIN by U.S. mail. You'll complete your enrollment with the PIN you receive. Then, you'll be able to make your payment. Oh - but the payment won't go through until the next business day. If you want the payment to go through the same day, you'll need to contact your financial institution to speed up the process.

Wow - what a lengthy process! That's why ACH - Direct Bank Account Drafting is one of our favorite HVUT payment options. With just a couple clicks, you're all set for another year of driving.

If you want to go the EFTPS route, though, be our guest! You'll need to check a box on our end, agreeing to make the payment separately in order for your Form 2290 to be processed to the IRS. You'll still receive your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 in minutes - but you'll need to do a lot more from your side to wrap up the whole process.

3 ways to pay your HVUT: ACH Direct Bank Account Draft

Each year, we get new users who have only ever paper filed their HVUT form. They're very used to handing in their 2290 form and paying on paper, as well. When our new users switch over to eFiling with 2290.us, they're often surprised by the extra choices you have for paying the 2290 tax.

It can take a minute or two to get familiar with your options. We want to help introduce you to your 3 ways to pay your tax owed. Today, we'd like you to meet ACH - direct bank account drafting.

1. ACH - Direct Bank Account Draft

This option is the electronic version of mailing in your check to the IRS. Only, with a direct bank account draft, you don't have to worry about your check being lost or misdirected through the mail. No bothering with printers, envelopes, stamps, or paper cuts, either.

To use this option, you'll be asked for your bank routing number, your bank account number, the type of account, and your phone number.

Yikes! We want what now?

We know it can be difficult to tell who you can trust these days. With over 10 years in eFiling expertise, we know that you can trust us with this sensitive information. We are bank-grade secure when it comes to your private information. There's a reason why we're an IRS-approved eFile provider: we've done what it takes to ensure that your information is taken care of.

We transmit you bank account draft information to the IRS when you submit your 2290 form. Although you'll get your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes, the IRS won't withdraw your tax owed immediately. It's usually about one to two business days before that transaction goes through. This depends on your bank and how they process outside payments.

You might be a good fit for the ACH - direct bank account drafting HVUT payment option if you're filing close to the deadline. This is an easy, simple, and trackable way to send in your payment quickly. Get started now, you'll have your Schedule 1 today!
